Hey everybody! Tony here. And I’m about to jump on my soap box and do a bit of preaching. Apologies in advance, but i feel this is something some you out there all need to hear. As an ex-smoker, I have been meaning to write this post for some time now and I have finally gotten around to it, so here it goes.

Smoking represents one of the biggest threats to public health in the modern age along with alcohol consumption and obesity. Cancer and heart disease are just two of the many ailments that it can cause along with lowered quality of life and vast expense for each and every smoker. Fair enough, 50 years ago nobody realised that smoking caused any harm. But it has been both scientific and common knowledge for some years now that smoking is a killer. Yet the tobacco business remains a multi-billion dollar industry and more and more people start smoking every year despite these deterrents and the knowledge that they have available to them. I just don’t get it.

There really is no excuse to start smoking in this modern age given what we know it does to our health (and if that doesn’t put you off, then the shear financial cost alone should). But for those who are already addicted to nicotine (and believe me, I know how addictive it can be) there are numerous aids for quitting on the market that were not available fifteen or twenty years ago. There are so many different options to help you quit that there really is no excuse.

The first two products on the market were the nicotine chewing gum and nicotine patches; both providing a hit of nicotine in lieu of smoking a cigarette. I must admit that despite repeated attempts, neither of these product worked for me as they still required a grand old dose of personal will power to be effective. Not long after came the first nicotine inhalers which were slightly more effective, although I must confess having never tried them.

I personally gave up using a prescription drug called Champix. I continued smoking whilst taking the pills on a daily basis and about a week and half later I could no longer bear the sight of cigarette, never mind the taste or smell. Such a powerful aid! An absolute miracle drug! (Why any smoker would want to continue damaging their body whilst this medicine is available to them is beyond me. I told you I was going to get on my high horse, didn’t I?) I found this method to be the one of the best and i am so grateful to this day that I came across it and benefited from it. Stopping smoking changed my life, obviously for the better.

But the most common aid to giving up smoking on the market today is the Vape! This a pipe like device that a user can “puff” on like a cigarette and it delivers nicotine vapour in lieu of smoking a cigarette. I’d much sooner recommend the method that I used, but as long as it stops you from smoking, the means is of no consequence.
